ALL ABOUT RETINOL: Why you need it, want it, and how to use it

Retinol has become increasingly popular in the skincare sphere with users raving about its anti-wrinkle and collagen-increasing benefits. Though retinol is considered “best-in-class” in fighting wrinkles and fine lines — how do you know if retinol is right for you? Today, our team at The BAWR is going to help you decide!

What is retinol?

Retinol is a form of Vitamin A. Retinol also stimulates new blood vessels in the skin, improving overall skin tone and color. When taken as a supplement, Vitamin A is full of antioxidant properties that help boost vision and immunity. Vitamin A is an essential nutrient for humans and has many benefits (also found in your good green veggies, like spinach!) — so you can think of retinol as a nutritious, veggie-packed smoothie for your skin!

How do you use retinol?

For best results, retinol should be applied at night — as often as once per day or 2-3 times per week (depending on your skin’s sensitivity). After using your evening cleanser, allow the skin to dry completely and apply a pea-sized amount of retinol all over the face and finish with a great evening moisturizer (we recommend our ReveSkin Silver Daily Moisturizer). We encourage clients to begin using retinol as early as their 20s to prevent fine lines from becoming deeper wrinkles later in life. Increased collagen not only helps skin stay strong and smooth, but it also helps bones stay strong and increases hair and nail growth too (win, win)!

Is retinol harmful to the skin?

Contrary to some beliefs, retinol is completely safe for the skin. It’s important to note that retinol does increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun (making the skin more prone to sunburn), so users are encouraged to wear sunscreen daily to prevent sun damage. We recommend our Hydro Sun Sunscreen or ReveSkin EleganceShade (Tinted), sold in-store! For those with sensitive skin, we recommend staying away from pairing retinol with retinoid, alpha hydroxy acid, or benzoyl peroxide to prevent increased sensitivity — unless otherwise directed by your dermatologist or doctor.

What do you pair retinol with for best results?

Known to be the “best-in-class” for erasing fine lines and wrinkles, retinol pairs great with Vitamin C if you are wanting to improve hyper-pigmentation and brighten skin tone. When using retinol, sunscreen is a must (we recommend SPF 30 or greater for best protection). Users are encouraged to use gentle cleansers and a hydrating moisturizer to cater to skin sensitivity. Retinol is best used in your night-time skincare regimen (along with a great evening moisturizing cream). Vitamin C serum and sunscreen should be applied each morning before makeup application for ultimate protection.
